The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, has died after reportedly collapsing during a party reconciliation meeting in Iyara.
Solomon reportedly slumped on Friday while the meeting was underway at the Iyara Town Hall, the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area.
He was subsequently rushed to a medical facility in neighbouring Kabba, where he was pronounced dead.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been officially disclosed.
The Kogi State APC Chairman, Aliyu Momoh Ezzu, confirmed Solomon’s death in a condolence message, describing him as a dedicated party leader whose contributions to the growth and unity of the APC in Ijumu would be remembered.
“His sudden death has sent shock and sadness across the APC family in Ijumu Local Government and Kogi State,” the statement issued on behalf of Ezzu said.
Ezzu expressed his condolences to Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, the people of Ijumu, Solomon’s family and friends, as well as members of the APC.
He also urged party members and supporters to remain calm and united as they mourned the deceased.
According to AIT Online, panic broke out among political leaders and delegates at the meeting following Solomon’s sudden collapse.
The meeting was reportedly convened as part of efforts to reconcile competing interests, resolve internal disagreements and strengthen unity among APC stakeholders in Ijumu ahead of future political activities.
The initiative was said to have been organised by a former chairman of Ijumu Local Government Area, Funsho Olumoko, following a mandate from the Ijumu Consultative Forum.
The reconciliation effort followed an earlier meeting in Iyara where APC stakeholders reportedly endorsed President Bola Tinubu and Governor Ododo for second terms.
However, that meeting was said to have ended in disagreement over local government leadership, with Solomon and some government officials reportedly walking out.
Friday’s meeting was subsequently organised to bridge the differences and bring together political leaders, local government and ward executives, women and youth leaders, and government appointees from the 15 wards in the council area.
APC Members Mourn
APC executives in Ijumu also expressed grief over Solomon’s death, describing it as sudden and devastating.
In a condolence message signed by the party’s General Secretary, Joshua Monday Oshatoba, the executives said Solomon served the party with dedication, courage and a strong sense of responsibility.
“The news of his passing has left us devastated and speechless. He was a committed party leader who served with dedication, courage, and a strong sense of responsibility,” the statement said.
The executives described his death as a major loss to his family, the APC, Ijumu Local Government and the wider community, noting that he died while actively serving the party.
The member representing Ijumu Constituency in the Kogi State House of Assembly, Omotayo Adeleye Ishaya, also mourned Solomon, describing his death as a painful and irreparable loss.
Ishaya said the deceased was a committed party member and brother whose contributions to the political development and unity of Ijumu would not be forgotten.
She extended her condolences to Solomon’s family, the APC, the people of Ogale Aduge and residents of Ijumu Constituency.
Solomon’s death has cast a pall over the political community in Ijumu, coming at a time when the APC was working to resolve internal differences and strengthen unity among its members.
Further details on the cause of his death are awaited from the relevant authorities.
