The United States of America President, Donald Trump, has said that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is former President, Joe Biden’s war, not his, distancing himself from the conflict.
Trump, who said this in a post on his Truth Social platform on Friday said that he is only trying to see if he can stop the war.
Decrying the thousands of soldiers and civilians that have been killed in Russia and Ukraine since the war started, Trump described the war as unnecessary and costly, citing unconfirmed battlefield casualties and pointing fingers at Biden’s administration.
“I have just been informed that almost 20,000 Russian soldiers died this month in the ridiculous War with Ukraine,” Trump wrote.
“Russia has lost 112,500 soldiers since the beginning of the year. That is a lot of unnecessary death.”
He also acknowledged Ukraine’s own losses, stating, “Ukraine, however, has also suffered greatly. They have lost approximately 8,000 soldiers since January 1, 2025, and that number does not include their missing.”
Trump added that Ukrainian civilian casualties have occurred “in smaller numbers, as Russian rockets crash into Kyiv, and other Ukrainian locales.”
“This is a War that should have never happened — This is Biden’s War, not “TRUMP’s.” I’m just here to see if I can stop it!” he declared.
Trump’s comments come amid heightened tensions in the region following recent missile strikes on Kyiv and other cities in which at least 31 people have been confirmed dead and no fewer than 159 others injured.
Trump has previously claimed that the war would not have occurred under his leadership and has made diplomatic overtures part of his campaign narrative.
Also, in a significant escalation of tensions with Russia, Trump earlier announced that he has ordered two nuclear submarines to be positioned in “appropriate regions” in response to provocative statements made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
Medvedev had on Thursday said that President Trump’s angry comments toward Russian officials were a “nervous reaction” and are evidence that Moscow is pursuing the right path.
The statement was in response to a post by Trump on Truth Social on Thursday, in which the US president described him as a “failed” former leader and warned him to “watch his words,” adding that Medvedev was “entering very dangerous territory.”
“If some words from the former president of Russia trigger such a nervous reaction from the high-and-mighty president of the United States, then Russia is doing everything right and will continue to proceed along its own path,” Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote on social media.
He also ridiculed Trump’s claim that the Russian and Indian economies were “dead” and going “down together” due to lack of cooperation with the US.
Medvedev had earlier dismissed Trump’s demands for Moscow to swiftly end its military campaign against Ukraine, calling the threats of secondary sanctions against Russian energy customers “theatrical” and ineffective.
Medvedev insisted that such ultimatums would not prevent Russia from pursuing its national security goals and merely make Trump appear similar to his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Trump on his Truth Social on Friday, said that Medvedev’s statements were “highly provocative” and “foolish and inflammatory,” prompting him to take precautionary measures.
“Based on the highly provocative statements… I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump stated.
He emphasised the importance of words in international relations, cautioning that they can lead to unintended consequences.
