The Lagos State Government has reiterated its determination to re-introduce the monthly environmental sanitation exercise soon to further enhance healthier and cleaner environment.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, accompanied by Chairman Bariga Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Kolabi Alabi, stated this on Sunday during a sanitation awareness campaign at Bariga LCDA.

Special Adviser on The Environment, Engr. Olalekan Rotimi-Akodu, Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Omobolaji Gaji and Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Services, Engr. Mahamood Adegbite, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, KAI Marshal, Major Olatunbosun Cole (Retd), Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, were also part of the government’s team to the area.
The exercise which was part of the ongoing awareness exercise, also had in attendance leaders of Community Development Associations, CDAs, representatives of market leaders, residents, and stakeholders, among others.
Recall that Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had recently, dropped the hint at the possibility of returning the monthly environmental sanitation to the state following what he described as an “appalling state” of uncleanliness observed in communities across the State.
The Governor stated this at the kick-off of a community-based enlightenment and advocacy forum on the Island, aimed at creating awareness about the need to encourage community participation in continuous sanitation and waste management, thereby reducing the risk of disease outbreaks.
Sanwo-Olu further explained the importance of regular sanitation for healthy living.
He urged residents to also make continuous cleaning of their homes, surrounding and street drainages a priority onward.
Speaking to the large turn-out of people at Omobokun Street, Ekimogun Underbridge by Iyana Iworo, Berger Bus Stop, Wahab, announced that, “The monthly environmental sanitation will be re-introduced and officially announced by Mr. Governor at the appropriate time soon, after adequate awareness, sanitization and advocacy programmes, currently embarked on are concluded.
“Earlier, we have kicked off the weekly advocacy programme from Lagos Island, followed by Mushin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, LGA and Bariga, today, before we move to another local government area next week Sunday.
“The state is embarking on this advocacy campaign to ensure that the citizens voluntarily embrace and imbibe the culture of cleanliness.”
